Frequent Hospice Questions
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care focuses on improving the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses in their homes, emphasizing comfort, dignity, and respect. It does not hasten or delay death but ensures patients’ needs are met.
Hospice is a care plan, not a place. An interdisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, aides, and counselors—creates a personalized plan to address medical, emotional, and spiritual needs, ensuring a pain-free life until the end.
Services include:
- Nurse and aide visits
- Medical equipment and supplies
- Pain and symptom management medication
- Respite care at home, hospital, or nursing home
- Crisis management for severe symptoms
- Grief support for families
- Assisted living visits
Who qualifies for hospice care?
At All Saints in San Antonio, patients and families receive care for as long as needed, based on the illness’s progression. We don’t limit the duration of hospice care. While most patients have a prognosis of six months or less, care can continue beyond this period if the attending physician certifies eligibility and the patient chooses to focus on comfort rather than curative treatments.
Is Hospice care just for elderly?
No, hospice care is not just for the elderly. It is available to individuals of all ages who have a terminal illness with a prognosis of six months or less to live, and who choose to focus on comfort and quality of life rather than curative treatments. Hospice care addresses the needs of patients and their families regardless of age.
Does All Saint Hospice provide constant care?
At All Saints Hospice in San Antonio, our services include regular visits from physicians, nurses, home health aides, and other team members. We also provide 24-hour care for patients experiencing severe pain or acute symptoms when necessary. Family members and private caregivers typically offer additional support.
Can a patient receive hospice care while living in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or other long-term care facility?
At All Saints Hospice in San Antonio, Texas, we offer hospice services to terminally ill patients regardless of their living situation. Whether patients reside in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or other long-term care settings, they will receive specialized visits from our team of nurses, health aides, social workers, and volunteers. We establish written agreements with care facilities to ensure our team provides care within those facilities.
Does insurance cover hospice?
At All Saints Hospice in San Antonio, all costs related to medications, therapies, and care support are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most individual insurance providers as part of hospice benefits. Medicare provides hospice benefits for individuals aged 65 and older. Those with a prognosis of six months or less can receive full Medicaid benefits through the Texas Medicaid Hospice Program. This program requires patients to waive their right to other Medicaid services aimed at curing their terminal illness, though they can still receive unrelated treatments.
While our hospice care services in San Antonio do not cover full-time caregiving, they can help reduce the financial burden on families and caregivers, who might otherwise have to pay out-of-pocket for medications and other necessary treatments.
Does hospice offer support to families after a patient’s death?
Yes. We offer grief support programs for family members and caregivers after a patient’s death. Our grief services in San Antonio include personal visits, education about the grieving process, and regular group support sessions. We also provide referrals to additional professional assistance when needed.
Can pain and symptoms be managed at home?
Yes, our hospice care service in San Antonio manages pain and other symptoms at the patient’s home. If symptoms intensify, family members or caregivers can reach our hospice nurse 24/7 for immediate care. We use advanced methods to alleviate pain and control symptoms, assessing patients during visits and developing care plans to improve comfort and quality of life. Our hospice physicians handle medication prescriptions and adjustments based on each patient’s needs.
